Nasceu em Paris, França, em 1982, e cresceu numa família franco-senegalesa. Desde os anos 2000, o trabalho cinematográfico de Mati a estabeleceu como um dos nomes da nova onda da cultura africana e afro-diaspórica. Começou trabalhando com teatro e, após uma breve passagem pelo Le Fresnoy (Estúdio Nacional de Arte Contemporânea), foi escolhida para protagonizar o longa “35 Doses de Rum” (2008), de Claire Denis. O encontro com a realizadora francesa confirmou o seu desejo de se tornar cineasta. Depois disso, realizou curtas-metragens como “Atlantiques” (2009) e “Big in Vietnam” (2011), ambos vencedores do Tigre de melhor filme do Festival de Roterdã, “Snow Canon” (2012), exibido no Festival de Veneza, e “A Thousand Suns” (2013), vencedor do grande prêmio do FIDMarseille. Seu primeiro longa, “Atlantics” (2019), recebeu o grande prêmio do júri no Festival de Cannes. “Dahomey” é seu segundo longa-metragem.
Born in Paris, France, in 1982. She grew up in a French-Senegalese family. Her film work since the 2000s has established the director as a representative of a new wave of African and Afro-diasporic culture. She began working in theater, and after a brief passage at Le Fresnoy (National Studio of Contemporary Art), she’s chosen to play the female lead in Claire Denis’ “35 Shot of Rum” (2008). Her encounter with the French director confirmed her desire to become a filmmaker. After that, she made short films like “Atlantiques” (2009) and “Big in Vietnam” (2011), both winners of the Tiger Award at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, “Snow Canon” (2012), presented at the Venice International Film Festival, and “A Thousand Suns” (2013), winner of the FIDMarseille grand prix. Her first feature film, “Atlantics” (2019), won the grand prix at the Cannes Film Festival. “Dahomey” is her second feature film.
