Nasceu em Guadalajara, México, em 1964. Estudou no Centro de Investigación y Estudios Cinematográficos e trabalha em cinema desde 1985. Seu primeiro longa-metragem para o cinema, “Cronos” (1992, 17ª Mostra), foi premiado na Semana da Crítica no Festival de Cannes. Transita entre o terror, a fantasia e a ficção científica, em geral com subtons políticos. Dirigiu filmes como “A Espinha do Diabo” (2001), “O Labirinto do Fauno” (2006, 30ª Mostra), exibido em competição em Cannes e ganhador de três Oscars, “A Forma da Água” (2017), vencedor do Leão de Ouro no Festival de Veneza e de quatro Oscars, incluindo melhor filme e direção, e “Pinocchio de Guillermo del Toro” (2022), vencedor do Oscar de melhor animação.
Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, in 1964. He studied at the Center for Research and Cinematographic Studies and has worked in film since 1985. His first feature film, “Cronos” (1992, 17th Mostra), was awarded in the Critics’ Week at the Cannes Film Festival. His work straddles horror, fantasy and science fiction, often with political overtones. He directed films such as “The Devil’s Backbone” (2001), “Pan’s Labyrinth” (2006, 30th Mostra), shown in competition at Cannes and winner of three Oscars, “The Shape of Water” (2017), winner of the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and four Oscars, including best film and director, and “Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toro” (2022), winner of the Oscar for best animation.
