Nasceu em 1951, no Quênia. Filha de indianos, foi criada na Inglaterra, onde iniciou carreira de repórter e dirigiu documentários para a BBC, BFI e Channel Four. Atriz, roteirista, produtora e diretora, fundou a Umbi Films em 1990. Bhaji on the Beach, de 1993, foi seu primeiro longa, que ganhou o prêmi do júri no Festival de Locarno. Fez também A Nice Arrangement (1994), What’s Cooking (2002) e Driblando o Destino (2002), vencedor do prêmio especial do júri e do público no Festival Internacional de Mulheres no Cinema de Bordeaux. Noiva e Preconceito ganhou prêmios no British Independent Film Award.
Born in 1951, in Kenya. The daughter of Indian parents, she was brought up in England where she began a career as reporter and directed documentaries for the BBC, BFI, and Channel Four. An actress, script writer, producer and director, she founded Umbi Films in 1990. Bhaji on the Beach in 1993, was her first feature awarded the prize from the jury at the Locarno Film Festival. She also made A Nice Arrangement (1994), What\`s Cooking (2002), and Bend it Like Beckham (2002) winner of the special prize of the jury and prize from the public at the Women\`s International Film Festival, in Bordeaux. Bride & Prejudice was awarded prizes by the British Independent Film Award.
