Nasceu em 1954, em Minneapolis, três anos antes de seu irmão Ethan, roteirista e produtor. Com Joel na direção e Ethan no roteiro, realizaram "Gosto de Sangue" (1984), revelado ao Brasil na 9ª Mostra e reexibido na 28ª Mostra. Os irmãos realizaram também, entre outros, "Ajuste Final" (1990, 14ª Mostra); "Barton Fink" (1991), Palma de Ouro em Cannes; "Fargo" (1996), "O Grande Lebowski" (1998), "E Aí Meu Irmão, Cadê Você?" (2000, 24ª Mostra); "Onde os Fracos Não Têm Vez" (2007, Filme de Encerramento da 31ª Mostra), vencedor do Oscar de melhor filme; "Um Homem Sério" (2009) e "Bravura Indômita" (2010). "Inside Llewyn Davis" (2013), o 16º longa-metragem da dupla, venceu o Grande Prêmio do Júri no Festival de Cannes.

The brothers also wrote and directed "Miller’s Crossing" (1990, 14th Mostra); "Barton Fink" (1991), winner of the Golden Palm in Cannes; "Fargo" (1996), "The Great Lebowski" (1998), "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" (2000, 24th Mostra), "The Man Who Wasn’t There" (2001); "No Country for Old Men" (2007, Closing Night of the 31st Mostra); "Burn After Reading" (2008, 32nd Mostra), "A Serious Man" (2009) and "True Grit" (2010). "Inside Llewyn Davis" (2013), their 16th feature film, won the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes Film Festival.
