Nasceu em Lamego, Portugal, em 1949. Estudou cinema no Conservatório Nacional de Lisboa. Após trabalhar como crítico, estreou como diretor de longas-metragens com "Conversa Acabada". Também assinou a direção de "Um Adeus Português" (1985), "Tempos Difíceis" (1987), "Três Palmeiras" (1994), "Tráfico" (1998), "Quem És Tu?" (2001), "A Mulher que Acreditava Ser Presidente dos EUA" (2003), "O Fatalista" (2005), "Filme do Desassossego" (2011), "Os Maias - Cenas da Vida Romântica" (2014), "O Cinema, Manoel de Oliveira e Eu" (2016) e "Peregrinação" (2018), todos exibidos pela Mostra. Em 2005, fez parte do júri da 29ª Mostra.
