Português, nasceu em 22 de dezembro de 1935, na cidade do Porto. Estudou direito em Lisboa e no IDHEC, em Paris. Foi presidente do Centro Português de Cinema no biênio 1974-1975, e Presidente da Associação Portuguesa de Diretores. Projetou-se internacionalmente logo em seu primeiro filme, "Os Verdes Anos" (1964), ganhador do Prêmio Opera Prima, no Festival de Locarno. Desde então, é presença constante nos principais festivais de cinema. O roteiro de "O Rio do Ouro" havia sido escrito em 1964, após a realização de seu primeiro filme. Em 1995 fez parte da série francesa "Cinema do Nosso Tempo" (seleção da 20ª Mostra), com um documentário sobre seu conterrâneo Manoel de Oliveira.
A Portuguese filmmaker, he was born on December 22, 1935, in Porto. He studied law in Lisbon and at the IDHEC, in Paris. He was president of the Portuguese Cinema Center in the 1974-1975 biennium, and President of the Portuguese Directors Association. He gained international recognition with his first film, "The Green Years" (1964), winner of the Opera Prima Award at the Locarno Film Festival. Since then, he has been a constant presence at major film festivals. The screenplay for "The Golden River" had been written in 1964, after his first film was made. In 1995, he was part of the French series "Cinema of Our Time" (a selection of the 20th Mostra), with a documentary about his compatriot Manoel de Oliveira.
