Nasceu em Bad Wörishofen, Alemanha, em 1945. Foi um dos mais versáteis autores do cinema contemporâneo. Seus mais de 40 títulos de longas-metragens e séries, produzidos desde 1969, marcaram o cinema alemão ao mostrar o estilo único, irreverente e crítico de Fassbinder. Viveu para a sua irrefreável criatividade, trabalhando ainda como ator e escrevendo seus próprios roteiros para cinema e teatro. Entre seus principais trabalhos estão "O Amor É Mais Frio que a Morte" (1969), "Precaução ante uma Prostituta" (1971), "As Lágrimas Amargas de Petra von Kant" (1972), "O Medo Consome a Alma" (1973), "Roleta Chinesa" (1976, 8ª Mostra), "Despair - Uma Viagem para a Luz" (1978, 35ª Mostra), "O Casamento de Maria Braum" (1978, 4ª Mostra), a minissérie "Berlin Alexanderplatz" (1980, 9ª Mostra), "O Desespero de Veronika Voss" (1982), vencedor do urso de ouro no Festival de Berlim, e "Querelle" (1982). Morreu em Munique em 1982 aos 37 anos.

Among his most important works are "Love Is Colder than Death" (1969), "Beware of a Holy Whore" (1971), "The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant" (1972), "Ali: Fear Eats the Soul" (1973), "Chinese Roulette" (1976, 8th Mostra), "Despair" (1978, 35th Mostra), "The Marriage of Maria Braun" (1978, 4th Mostra), the miniseries "Berlin Alexanderplatz" (1980, 9th Mostra), "Veronika Voss" (1982), winner of the golden bear at Berlinale, and "Querelle" (1982). He died in Munich in 1982 at the age of 37.
