Nasceu em Bruxelas, na Bélgica, em 1953. Com grande experiência como atriz de teatro, cinema e televisão, atuou em filmes como "Os Renegados" (1985), "O Fabuloso Destino de Amélie Poulain" (2001, 25ª Mostra), "Paris, Te Amo" (2006, 30ª Mostra), "Louise Michel, A Rebelde" (2009, 33ª Mostra), "Micmacs – Um Plano Complicado" (2009, 34ª Mostra), "Camille Outra Vez" (2012) e "Dentro da Casa" (2012). "A Subida da Maré" (2004, 28ª Mostra), sua estreia na direção, lhe rendeu dois prêmios César: melhor filme de estreia e melhor atriz. Protagonizou o filme "Séraphine" (2008), pelo qual ganhou outro César de melhor atriz. "Henri" (2013) é seu segundo longa-metragem como diretora.

Her directorial debut, "When the Sea Rises" (2004, 28th Mostra), earned her two César Awards: Best First Film and Best Actress. She starred in the film "Séraphine" (2008), for which she won another César for Best Actress. "Henri" (2013) is her second feature film as a director.
