Nasceu em Wiesbaden, Alemanha, em 1939. Mudou-se para a França em 1956. Estudou política e foi assistente de Louis Malle, Jean-Pierre Melville e Alain Renais. Dirigiu "O Jovem Törless" (1965), "A Honra Perdida de Katharina Blum" (1975), em parceria com Margarethe von Trotta, e "O Tambor" (1979, 4ª Mostra), vencedor da Palma de Ouro em Cannes e do Oscar de melhor filme estrangeiro. Dele, a Mostra também exibiu "Um Amor de Swann" (1983), "A Lenda de Rita" (1999) e "Mar Calmo" (2012).

Mostra has also presented his films "Swann in Love" (1983), "The Legend of Rita" (1999), and "Calm at Sea" (2012).
