Nasceu em Almaty, Cazaquistão, em 1974. Estudou na Academia de Artes de Düsseldorf e na escola de cinema VGIK, em Moscou. Fez ainda uma pós-graduação na Academia Alemã de Cinema e Televisão em Berlim (DFFB). Dirigiu, entre outros, os curtas "Jolka" (2000), "Immendo" (2001) e "Shooting" (2011), e o longa "28 ½" (2013). "O Filme Invisível" é seu segundo longa-metragem.
