Born in Detroit, U.S.A., in 1961. He studied at three universities: Brigham Young University, Kansas, and New York. When he was studying script writing and drama in the U.S., he won a scholarship to the Royal Court Theatre, in London, to take part in the text workshops at the Sundance Institute. His polemic In the Company of Men (1997) was his first film as director. The 23rd Mostra showed Your Friends & Neighbors (1998). Nurse Betty, his third feature, was awarded the prize for best script at the Cannes Festival this year.
