Born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1972, he studied at the School of Theater and Cinema in the Portuguese capital and worked as a film critic. In 2012, the 36th Mostra held an early retrospective of his work, exhibiting his award-winning short films and his feature films “The Face You Deserve” (2004), “Our Beloved Month of August” (2008), critic’s prize at the 32nd Mostra, and “Tabu” (2012), awarded with the Alfred Bauer and the critics prizes at the Berlin International Film Festival. Gomes also made the “Arabian Nights” trilogy (2015) and “The Tsugua Diaries” (2021), both presented at the Cannes Film Festival and Mostra.

Em 2012, a 36ª Mostra realizou uma retrospectiva dos filmes de Gomes, que incluiu, além de seus premiados curtas-metragens, os longas “A Cara que Mereces” (2004), “Aquele Querido Mês de Agosto” (2008), vencedor do prêmio da crítica na 32ª Mostra, e “Tabu” (2012), ganhador dos prêmios Alfred Bauer e da crítica no Festival de Berlim. Realizou também a trilogia “As Mil e Uma Noites” (2015) e o longa-metragem “Diários de Otsoga” (2021), exibidos no Festival de Cannes e na Mostra.
