His passion for opera and singer Maria Callas deeply marked his filmmaking career. His first feature film, "Eika Katappa" (1969), awarded at the Mannheim Film Festival, integrated opera, literature, and theater. Among his films are "The Death of Maria Malibran" (1972), "Goldflocken" (1976), "The Kingdom of Naples" (1978), "The Council of Love" (1982) — Critics' Prize at the 7th São Paulo International Film Festival —, "The Rose King" (1986), and "Malina" (1991). Schroeter is also known as a stage and opera director, including productions of Catalani's "La Wally," Puccini's "Tosca," and Beethoven's "Fidelio."
