2020
The year 2020 will be remembered for Covid-19 and the consequences brought by the pandemic. Contrary to all predictions made at the turn of the year, 2020 has been a time of mourning, introspection, and reflection.
From China, a country that has been talked about a lot this year, came the artwork of the 44th São Paulo International Film Festival. It is an emblematic photo by the great filmmaker Jia Zhangke, in which a man is seen burning incense for the statue of WenQuxing, the legendary deity of literature and writing. Jia also brings us the documentary Swimming Out Till the Sea Turns Blue and the short film Visit, in which Covid is the main character.
Coronation, by Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, addresses Covid-19 through powerful images secretly shot in Wuhan, while Abel Ferrara shows us the pandemic’s arrival in Europe in the documentary Sportin’ Life.
Covid-19 is not only present on the screens, it is still among us. With theaters closed and uncertainty remaining, the 44th Mostra was forced to take place online and in drive-in cinemas only. Unlike 2009, when for the first time Mostra had a selection of its program online (the first online film festival in the world!) to expand access to people outside of São Paulo, today the internet is what allows us to exist. It also allows Mostra to be present all over Brazil, with its full program available everywhere.
We hope Mostra will be a bit like the incense smoke that symbolizes comfort, purification, and healing in so many religions and rituals. The unusual circumstances have not been of detriment to the selection of films for the 2020 edition, which is strong and full of surprises, coming through the clouds and waves of the internet.
As in all editions, Mostra presents a vast panorama of world cinema, including renowned authors and new directors. In this year’s program, we will also screen films that have won awards at festivals such as Berlin, Sundance, Tribeca, Toronto, Rotterdam, and Venice, as well as some of the world’s leading documentary festivals.
For the first time, the Humanity Award will be given not to an individual, but a group of people: the employees of the Brazilian Cinematheque. In a very troubled year for the institution, its employees showed a moving commitment to our heritage and our memory.
The second Humanity Award will honor the monumental career of master Frederick Wiseman. In a year where elections will take place in many parts of the world, he gives us City Hall, a film that
helps us understand the difference between a politician and a statesman, as well as the difference between government officials and civil servants.
Producer Sara Silveira will receive the Leon Cakoff Prize for her persistent and courageous career of more than 30 years, and for her efforts to reveal new Brazilian filmmakers and make their voices heard around the world.
The 44th Mostra also pays tribute to filmmaker Fernando Coni Campos by screening three of his films: Voyage to the End of the World (1968), Sweet Thieves (1977) and O Mágico e o Delegado (1983).
However, Mostra is not only about films. In its fourth edition, Forum Mostra will be held online, making it possible for international guests to participate. In addition, master Ruy Guerra will teach an online course entitled “The History of Cinema according to Ruy Guerra”. We hope that watching and discussing films will bring us a variety of smoke with different perfumes that will help alleviate our afflictions.

O ano de 2020 ficará marcado pela Covid-19 e pelas consequências que a pandemia nos trouxe. Contra todas as previsões que o número nos inspirava na virada do ano, 2020 tem sido um tempo de luto, de introspecção e reflexão.
Da China, que foi tão falada este ano, veio também a arte da 44ª Mostra Internacional de Cinema, uma emblemática foto do grande cineasta Jia Zhangke, na qual um homem acende incensos para a estátua de WenQuxing, legendária divindade da literatura e da escrita. Jia também nos traz o documentário Nadando Até o Mar se Tornar Azul e o curta A Visita, em que a Covid é o principal personagem.
Coronation, do artista chinês Ai Weiwei, também aborda a Covid-19, por meio de imagens poderosas feitas clandestinamente em Wuhan. Já Abel Ferrara nos mostra a chegada da pandemia na Europa com o documentário Sportin’ Life.
Mas, para além da presença nas telas, a Covid-19 resta entre nós. Com as salas de cinema fechadas e com a incerteza ainda presente, a Mostra se viu forçada a ter a sua 44ª edição apenas on-line e em cinemas drive-in. Diferentemente de 2009, quando a Mostra apresentou sua primeira seleção on-line (o primeiro festival on-line do mundo!) com a ideia de possibilitar acesso a pessoas de fora de São Paulo, hoje a internet é o que nos possibilita a existência e também a presença da Mostra de maneira integral em todo o Brasil.
Então, esperamos que a Mostra seja um pouco como a fumaça do incenso que, em tantas religiões e cultos, simboliza o alento, a purificação e a cura. Porque a situação inusitada não prejudicou a seleção de 2020, que se insinua forte e surpreendente pelas nuvens e ondas da internet.
Como em todas as edições, a Mostra apresenta um vasto panorama do cinema mundial, com autores consagrados e novos realizadores. Na programação deste ano também apresentaremos títulos premiados em festivais como Berlim, Sundance, Tribeca, Toronto, Roterdã e Veneza, além de obras laureadas em alguns dos principais festivais de documentários do mundo.
Pela primeira vez, o Prêmio Humanidade será dado a um grupo de pessoas: os funcionários da Cinemateca Brasileira. Em um ano muito conturbado para a instituição, os seus funcionários mostraram um emocionante comprometimento com o nosso patrimônio e a nossa memória.
O segundo Prêmio Humanidade será dedicado ao mestre Frederick Wiseman pela sua obra monumental. Neste ano de eleições pelo mundo, ele nos presenteia com o filme City Hall e nos faz entender a diferença entre um político e um estadista; e também a diferença dos funcionários públicos imbuídos de sua verdadeira função, a de servidores públicos.
Já a produtora Sara Silveira receberá o Prêmio Leon Cakoff pela persistente e corajosa carreira de mais de 30 anos. Homenageada pela empreitada em revelar novos cineastas brasileiros, fazendo com que as vozes desses realizadores ecoem ao redor do mundo.
A 44ª Mostra também homenageia o cineasta Fernando Coni Campos apresentando três obras: Viagem ao Fim do Mundo (1968), Ladrões de Cinema (1977) e O Mágico e o Delegado (1983).
Mas a Mostra não será feita só de filmes. O Fórum Mostra completará seu quarto ano com uma versão virtual, que possibilitará a participação de convidados de outros países. Além disso, o mestre Ruy Guerra dará um curso on-line intitulado “A História do Cinema segundo Ruy Guerra”.
Agora, resta torcer para que o cinema, realizado ou falado, nos traga uma variedade de fumaças com diferentes perfumes e que, com eles, consigamos atenuar um pouco os males que nos afligem.
