Maria and José Ribeiro are Portuguese emigrants that have been living in France for over 30 years. The couple inhabit in an apartment building situated in a luxury neighborhood in Paris. Maria is the concierge and José, her husband, is a builder. They are beloved by the French, who appreciate their honesty, simplicity and humbleness, but also because they have never refused to help those who asked for. One day, José finds out that he will inherit a large amount of money from a brother that used to live in Portugal. Their lives immediately changes, and they find it their great opportunity to go back to their home country.
