The unknown one is Irena. She moved many years ago from Ucrania to Italy and today lives between the ghosts of the past and a search for the present. Who, in fact, is Irena? Like so many others she escaped from Eastern Europe. After surviving a cruel and dramatic journey, she was easy prey to an unscrupulous man. She was subjected to indescribable brutality and humiliation that she will never forget. Only one beautiful memory remains: a melancholic lost love. Basically, in spite of the tragic events, her character remains intact. Under an apparently submissive expression, her natural pride and her power to rebel persist unaltered. She accepts the job to work as a cleaning woman in a building. Her intention, however, is to get closer to a family living on the other side of the street. The Adachers work with gold. The family consists of a wife Valeria, a husband, Donato and a little girl Tea. Nothing will prevent Irena from getting a job in that house. Not even murder. The Unknown was awarded the Prize from the Public at the Moscow Film Festival and also five David di Donatello prizes (the official prize for Italian cinema): film, director, actress (Kseniya Rappoport), photography and music.
A "desconhecida" é Irena. Ela mudou-se há muitos anos da Ucrânia para a Itália e hoje vive entre fantasmas do passado e uma busca pelo presente. Quem é Irena, de fato? Como várias outras, ela fugiu do Leste europeu. Depois de sobreviver a uma viagem cruel e dramática, virou presa fácil de um homem inescrupuloso. Foi submetida a brutalidades e humilhações impronunciáveis, que jamais se apagarão da memória. Apenas uma bela lembrança permanece: um melancólico amor perdido. No fundo, apesar dos trágicos eventos, seu caráter permaneceu intacto. Sob uma fisionomia aparentemente submissa, seu orgulho natural e seu poder de se rebelar permanecem inalterados. Ela aceita trabalhar de faxineira num prédio. Sua intenção, porém, é aproximar-se de uma família que mora do outro lado da rua. Os Adachers trabalham com ouro.
A família é composta pela esposa Valeria, o marido Donato e a garotinha Tea. Nada impedirá Irena de conseguir um trabalho naquela casa.
Nem mesmo um assassinato. A Desconhecida conquistou o Prêmio do Público no festival de Moscou e também cinco prêmios David di Donatello (o prêmio oficial do cinema italiano): filme, diretor, atriz (Kseniya Rappoport), fotografia e música.
