Donny Dubrow owns a pawn shop. One day he discovers that he has sold a rare and valuable coin with the effigy of a buffalo for a minimum amount. He can not get over this and decides he will steal the coin back again. And while he is at it, it would not be a bad idea is he were to take the occasion to "clean" the shop out. Donny lays out the plans together with his adopted son for whom the robbery will be a kind of baptism of fire. A former partner of Donny's at poker, the schooled Teach, wants to take the boy out of the plans and take his place himself. Loyalty, he argues is all very well, but business is business. Teach spares no efforts in exerting pressure on Donny to attain his objectives. All is fair where money is concerned. If there is, in fact honour among thieves, it is not the same for all.

Pensando bem, não seria mau aproveitar para "limpar" a loja. Donny arma um esquema, junto com seu filho de criação, o jovem Bobby - para quem o assalto vai ser uma espécie de batismo de fogo. Mas um velho parceiro de Donny no pôquer, o escolado Teach, quer tirar o garoto da jogada e entrar no seu lugar. Lealdade, argumenta ele, é muito legal, mas trata-se de um negócio.
