An adaptation of the novel of the same name, written in 1863 by Camilo Castelo Branco, one of the greatest Portuguese romantic authors. The story, a precise rendering of the novel, concerns the impossible love between Simão Botelho and Teresa de Albuquerque, a boy and a girl of noble families engaged in a feud. The film discusses the transgression of social laws and norms and their replacement by new standards of behavior adopted by the central characters, standards complied with to the point of death or insanity. Simão really did exist: he was the uncle of author Camilo Castelo Branco. Both uncle and nephew experienced complicated love affairs and were held prisoner because of these same affairs, in the same prison, in Porto. This was the opening film for the 3rd Mostra.

O texto, seguido com extrema precisão, trata do amor impossível entre Simão Botelho e Teresa de Albuquerque, dois jovens pertencentes a famílias nobres e inimigas. O filme discute a transgressão das leis e normas sociais e sua substituição por novos padrões de comportamento criados pelos personagens centrais e que são obedecidas até a morte ou a loucura. O personagem Simão realmente existiu: era um tio do escritor Camilo Castelo Branco. Tanto o tio como o sobrinho viveram histórias românticas complicadas e estiveram presos por causa delas na mesma prisão, no Porto. Foi o filme de abertura da 3ª Mostra.
