Juli, a 16-year-old girl, is confined to a boarding school for petty theft and vagrancy. Always looking for a way out, she eventually accepts the chance to work at a weaving factory, where she meets Aranka, the workers’ leader, who decides to help her. Juli also seeks out her alcoholic father and her older, married sister in hopes of finding a place to stay. She finds no support and ends up running away with Aranka’s son. The police find them and send Juli back to the boarding school. There, she has the chance to start a new life if she agrees to an arranged marriage with a young man chosen by the headmistress.
Juli, uma garota de 16 anos, é confinada em um internato por pequenos roubos e vagabundagem. Sempre buscando uma maneira de escapar, ela acaba aceitando a oportunidade de trabalhar em uma fábrica de tecelagem, onde conhece Aranka, líder das operárias, que decide ajudá-la. Juli procura ainda o pai alcoólatra e a irmã mais velha, casada, para ter um lugar onde ficar. Não encontra apoio e acaba fugindo com o filho de Aranka.
