A film as controversial as it was troubled. Produced by Bob Guccione, who was more concerned with the commercial than the artistic aspect of the production, "Caligula" resulted in a series of problems: writer Gore Vidal and director Tinto Brass preferred to remove their names from the credits after Guccione's interference in the film's editing, and the actors did not want their names associated with the movie. Nevertheless, it is a lavish production, with hundreds of extras, expensive sets (a gigantic boat, statues, and the imperial brothel), and a cast that brings together Malcolm McDowell, John Gielgud, and Peter O'Toole. The screenplay follows the life of Gaius, who became Caligula Caesar, the fourth Roman emperor (37-41 AD). The film's first screening in Brazil took place at the Mostra.
