Aristocratic Alfreda experiences a Biblical fixation and awaits a second annunciation of the Virgin Mary. She believes that the families of Mary and of Jesus also belonged to the aristocracy of their times. In this tireless wait, she finds support in her husband who, in some ways, also awaits redemption. Alfreda is fearfully ill and she seeks support, also, from an English professor of theology, a priest, and a nun. A couple of good-for-nothings, newly released from jail, and interested in the couple?s fortune, would like to stage the apparition of the Virgin Mary.
