Forty-year-old Andreas arrives in a strange city with no memory of how he got there. He is presented with a job, an apartment - even a wife. But before long, he notices that something is wrong. The people around him seem cut off from any real emotion, and communicate only in superficialities. The ominous “caretakers”, who make sure the city runs smoothly, keep an increasing watch over him as they find he doesn’t fit in. Andreas makes an attempt to escape the city, but he discovers there’s no way out. He then meets Hugo, who has the same longings as himself and has found a crack in a wall in his cellar. Beautiful music streams out from the crack. A new plan for escape is hatched.
Andreas, 40 anos, chega a uma estranha cidade sem se lembrar como. Ao chegar, ele ganha um emprego, um apartamento e até uma mulher. Mas em pouco tempo ele descobre que algo está errado: as pessoas ao seu redor parecem privadas de emoções e se comunicam de forma superficial. Os sinistros “caretakers”, responsáveis por garantir o bom andamento da cidade, aumentam a vigilância sobre Andreas quando descobrem que ele não se encaixa ali. Ele tenta escapar da cidade, percebe que não existem saídas, e acaba conhecendo Hugo, que compartilha seus anseios e desconfianças. Hugo encontrou um buraco em sua adega, de onde saem belas melodias. Juntos, eles começam a armar um novo plano de fuga.
