A "crime passionnel" becomes a moving miracle before it becomes a farse, with a dose of fantastic realism. With all of these ingredients, it would almost seem a Woody Allen comedy, but it is not so. This is a comedy with Woody Allen who is the protagonist, but under Mexican Director Alfonso Arau. Allen is Tex, a Kosher butcher married to Candy, a former ballerina with no talent or enthusiasm to devote herself to being faithful. One day, Tex finds her in bed with another. He murders her and must get rid of the body. Not knowing what to do, he cuts her up into pieces and goes off to Mexico in the hope of being able to bury her. The trouble is that Tex loses one of Candy?s hands along the way, and it is found by a blind girl. The woman touches the lost hand and regains her sight. So she believes that this is a hand of the Virgin Mary. The plot is further enriched by the presence of characters such as Padre Jerome, who does not believe in the miracle; the town prostitute, who has an affair with the priest; the mayor, who will support the miracle at all costs, and Director Alfonso Arau, himself, in the role of Doctor Amado.

Com todos esse ingredientes, até parece uma comédia de Woody Allen, mas não é. Trata-se de uma comédia com Woody Allen, que é o protagonista, mas com direção do mexicano Alfonso Arau. Allen é Tex, um açougueiro kosher casado com Candy, uma antiga dançarina que não tem qualquer talento ou entusiasmo para se dedicar à fidelidade. Um dia, Tex a surpreende na cama com outro. Depois de assassiná-la, ele precisa dar um fim ao corpo. Sem saber o que fazer, corta a mulher em pedaços e vai para o México, na esperança de conseguir enterrá-la. Os problemas começam quando Tex perde uma das mãos de Candy no caminho, que é encontrado por uma cega. A mulher, ao tocar a mão perdida da morta, volta a enxergar. Ela acredita, assim, que se trata da mão da Virgem Maria. O enredo é enriquecido ainda mais com a presença de personagens como padre Jerome, que não acredita no milagre; a prostituta da cidade, que tem um caso com o padre; o prefeito, que defenderá o milagre a todo custo, e o próprio diretor Alfonso Arau, no papel de doutor Amado.
