A época, a obra, os amores, a vida e a morte do escritor português Wenceslau de Moraes (1854-1929), que saiu de Portugal no final do século 19 para buscar no Japão uma arte de viver que conciliasse o material e o espiritual. Composto por nove cantos, e com forte inspiração teatral, o filme é uma das obras mais complexas da história do cinema português.
Exibido no Festival de Cannes de 1982.
