Sinopse
1565. Enquanto o inimigo polonês avança sobre o território russo, o czar Ivan IV, conhecido como Ivan o Terrível, sucumbe à loucura e ao misticismo. Sua milícia pessoal aterroriza o povo e a nobreza, o que provoca a renúncia do líder da Igreja Russa. Em seu lugar, Ivan entroniza seu amigo de infância, o honesto Philip. Mas os dois logo entram em confronto. Philip se opõe às ações sangrentas do czar, que acredita ser o depositário da vontade de Deus na terra. 1565. While the Polish enemy is advancing into Russian territory, tsar Ivan IV, known as Ivan the Terrible, is sinking into mystical madness. His personal militia is tormenting the people and the nobles, which causes the metropolitan, the head of the Russian Church, to resign. In his place, Ivan enthrones his childhood friend, the honest Philip. But the two men soon clash with each other. Philip is opposed to the bloody machinations of the tsar, who believes himself to be the repository of God’s will. This is the beginning of a deadly duel, both political and spiritual.
