Nasceu em Feldkirch, Áustria, em 1970. Formou-se em ciência cognitiva em Viena e Berlim e como assistente de câmera na Associação Austríaca de Diretores de Fotografia. Pós graduou-se em cinema e TV na Academia de Artes da Mídia em Colônia, na Alemanha. Dirigiu alguns curtas, como Frank (1999), antes de estrear na direção de longas com o filme The White Noise (2002).
Seu longa-metragem seguinte, o premiado Edukators (2004), foi um dos destaques da 28ª Mostra, concorreu à Palma de Ouro no Festival de Cannes e é considerado por muitos críticos um dos filmes alemães mais importantes da década. Dirigiu ainda Free Rainer (2007), A Cabana (2011) e o seguimento Gefährder, parte do longa-metragem Alemanha 09 (2009), exibido na 33ª Mostra.
Born in Feldkirch, Austria, in 1970, Weingartner studied cognitive science in Vienna and in Berlin. Additionally, he later started a qualification for camera assistant at the Austrian Association of Cinematography and completed his post-graduate studies at the Film and Television at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne, Germany. He directed short films such as Frank (1999) before directing his feature debut, The White Noise (2002).
His next feature film, the award winning The Edukators (2004), one of the highlights of the 28th Mostra, was in the selection of the international competition at the Cannes Film Festival and is considered by many critics one of the most important German films of the decade. He has also directed Free Rainer (2007), Hut in the Woods (2011) and the segment Gefährder, part of the feature film Deutschland 09 (2009), screened during the 33rd Mostra.
