Nasceu na ilha de Mindanao, nas Filipinas, em 1958. Mudou-se para Nova York em 1992, onde trabalhou como jornalista. Retornou para as Filipinas em 1997, tendo realizado filmes para o estúdio Regal Films antes de tornar-se diretor independente.
Homenageado com uma retrospectiva de sua obra na 37ª Mostra, dirigiu longas-metragens como Batang West Side (2001), Evolução de Uma Família Filipina (2004); Morte na Terra de Encantos (2007) e Melancholia (2008), ambos premiados no Festival de Veneza; e Norte, o Fim da História (2013), que estreou no Festival de Cannes. Ainda dirigiu o média-metragem As Borboletas Não Têm Memória (2009) e o documentário Investigação sobre uma Noite Inesquecível (2012). Em 2013, presidiu o júri do Festival de Locarno. Vive em Manila e em Nova York.
Born on the Philippine island of Mindanao, in 1958. He moved to New York in 1992, where he worked as a journalist. Diaz returned to the Philippines in 1997, where he directed films for the studio Regal Films before becoming an independent filmmaker.
Honored with a retrospective of his work at the 37th Mostra, he directed feature films such as Batang West Side (2001), Evolution of a Filipino Family (2004), Death in the Land of Encantos (2007) and Melancholia (2008) – both awarded at the Venice Film Festival; and Norte, the End of History (2013), which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. He has also directed the medium-length film Butterflies Have No Memories (2009) and the documentary An Investigation on the Night that Won`t Forget (2012). In 2013, he served as Jury President at the Festival of Locarno. He lives in Manila and in New York.
