Nascido em Baranovitchi em 1964, quando a Bielorrússia ainda fazia parte da União Soviética, se mudou ainda jovem para Kiev, na Ucrânia. Nos anos 80, formou-se em engenharia e matemática no Instituto Politécnico da capital ucraniana. Ingressou no Instituto de Cinematografia de Moscou em 1991. Dirigiu documentários como Bloqueio (2005); A Estação de Trem (2000), Retrato (2002) e os longas documentais A Colônia (2001) e Paisagem (2003).
Sua estreia na ficção se deu com Minha Felicidade (2010, 34ª Mostra), seguido de Na Neblina (2012, 36ª Mostra), vencedor do Prêmio da Crítica no Festival de Cannes. A 36ª Mostra realizou uma retrospectiva de sua obra, incluindo seu filme mais recente, o documentário O Milagre de Santo Antônio (2012), rodado em Portugal. Atualmente, mora na Alemanha.
Born in Baranovitchi in 1964, while Byelorussia was still part of the Soviet Union, he moved to Kiev, Ukraine, when he was still very young. During the 80s, he graduated in engineering and mathematics from the Polytechnic Institute in the Ukrainian capital. He enrolled at the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography in Moscow in 1991. Loznitsa directed documentaries such as Blockade (2005), The Train Stop (2000), Portrait (2002) and the documentary features Settlement (2001) and Landscape (2005).
His feature film debut came with My Joy (2013, 34th Mostra), followed by In The Fog (2012, 36ª Mostra), winner of the Critics Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. The 36th Mostra hosted a retrospective of his work, including his more recent film, the documentary O Milagre de Santo Antônio (2012), filmed in Portugal. He currently lives in Germany.
