Pioneira no cinema americano independente e uma das cineastas mais notáveis reveladas pelo movimento No Wave nos anos 1980, em Nova York, ela é conhecida por explorar temas ligados à sexualidade, à violência e ao poder. Dirigiu filmes como Variety (1984, 9ª Mostra), o segmento Greed, do longa-metragem Seven Women Seven Sins (1986), Luminous Motion (2000) e Handsome Harry (2009). Sua obra faz parte da coleção permanente de instituições como o Whitney Museum, o Instituto Britânico de Cinema, o Centro Georges Pompidou e o MoMA. Parte de seu trabalho, incluindo seu longa mais recente, O Afogamento, será exibido na 40ª Mostra.

A pioneer in American independent cinema and one of the most notable filmmakers to come out of the No Wave movement of the 1980’s in New York, she is known for her explorations of themes related to sexuality, violence and power. She directed films like Variety (1984, 9th Mostra), the segment Greed of the feature film Seven Women Seven Sins (1986), Luminous Motion (2000) and Handsome Harry (2009). Her films are in the permanent collection of the Whitney Museum, The British Film Institute Collection, The Centre Georges Pompidou and MoMA. Part of her work, including her latest film The Drowning, will be screened at the 40th Mostra.
