Nasceu em Istambul, na Turquia, em 1959. Em 1976, mudou-se para a Itália, onde estudou história do cinema na Universidade de Roma. Além disso estudou história da arte e direção teatral. Trabalhou no Living Theatre, liderado por Julian Beck, antes de se voltar ao universo cinematográfico. A partir de 1982, tornou-se assistente de direção em filmes de Massimo Troisi, Ricky Tognazzi e Marco Risi. Estreou como diretor em Hamam - O Banho Turco (1997). Também dirigiu, entre outros, os longas Uma Noite no Harém (1999), Um Amor Quase Perfeito (2001), A Janela da Frente (2003, 27ª Mostra), Cuore Sacro (2005, 29ª Mostra) e Um Dia Perfeito, de 2008, mesmo ano em que o Museu de Arte Moderna de Nova York dedicou uma retrospectiva completa para sua obra. Realizou ainda O Primeiro que Disse (2010), Magnifica Presenza (2012), Allacciate le Cinture (2014) e Rosso Istanbul (2016). Seu mais recente trabalho, O Segredo de Nápoles, será exibido na 42ª Mostra.
Born in Istanbul in 1959, Ferzan Ozpetek moved to Italy in 1976 to study History of Cinema at the Rome University. He also attended courses of History of Art and Stage Direction. He worked for Living Theatre, led by Julian Beck, before returning to cinema. As from 1982, he became assistant director in films by Massimo Troisi, Ricky Tognazzi and Marco Risi. He directed his first film, The Turkish Baths, in 1997. Özpetek also directed, among others, the features Harem Suare (1999), The Ignorant Fairies (2001), The Window Opposite (2003, 27th Mostra), Sacred Heart (2005, 29th Mostra) and A Perfect Day in 2008, same year that Museum of Modern Art of New York dedicated a retrospective to his complete work. After that, he made the features Loose Cannons (2010), Magnificent Presence (2012), Fasten Your Seatbelts (2014) and Istanbul Red (2016). His most recent work, Naples in Veils, will be exhibit at the 42nd Mostra.
