Nasceu em Lisboa, Portugal, em 1965. É atriz, roteirista, cantora e diretora. Iniciou a carreira de atriz em 1982 no filme Silvestre (27ª Mostra), de João César Monteiro. Trabalhou com os principais cineastas portugueses, como Manoel de Oliveira, em A Divina Comédia (1991, 15ª Mostra). Em 1994, Maria ganhou a Copa Volpi de melhor atriz no Festival de Veneza pelo filme português Três Irmãos (1994, 18ª Mostra), de Teresa Villaverde. Estreou na direção com A Morte do Príncipe (1991, 16ª Mostra). Também dirigiu Capitães de Abril (2000), Prêmio do Júri de Melhor Filme na 24ª Mostra; os documentários Bem Me Quer...Mal Me Quer (2004, 28ª Mostra) e Repare Bem (2012, 36ª Mostra); segmentos dos filmes Bem-Vindo a São Paulo (2004, 28ª Mostra) e Mundo Invisível (2012, 35ª e 36ª Mostras), ambos projetos coletivos da Mostra; e o longa-metragem Entre Dois Desconhecidos (2015, 19ª Mostra). Integrou o Júri da 18ª Mostra, em 1994.

She worked with the most important Portuguese filmmakers such as Manoel de Oliveira, in The Divine Comedy (1991, 15th Mostra). In 1994, she won the Volpi Cup for best actress at the Venice International Film Festival for Two Brothers, My Sister (1994, 18th Mostra), directed by Teresa Villaverde. Maria made her directorial debut with The Death of the Prince (1991, 16th Mostra). She also directed April Captains (2000), Jury Award of Best Picture at the 24th Mostra; the documentaries Je T’aime, Moi Non Plus (2004, 28th Mostra) and Repare Bem (2012, 36th Mostra); segments of the collective films Welcome to São Paulo (2004, 28th Mostra) and Invisible World (2012, 36th Mostra), both produced by Mostra; and the feature Between Two Strangers (2015, 19th Mostra). She was a member of the Jury of the 18th Mostra, in 1994.
