A 4ª Mostra fez uma retrospectiva em homenagem a Andy Warhol e exibiu, entre muitos outros, Bom Povo Português, de Rui Simões, a respeito da Revolução dos Cravos, considerado um dos melhores filmes já feitos sobre manipulação política. O título, inclusive, ganhou os Prêmios de Público e de Crítica. Durante a Mostra de 1981 houve o primeiro e único caso de veto a um filme em toda a história do festival —se tratava de um curta-metragem que foi proibido pela censura porque abordava a doutrinação socialista de crianças chinesas. Pelo terceiro ano consecutivo, Paulo de Andrade criou o pôster da Mostra. A 4ª Mostra Internacional de Cinema em São Paulo aconteceu de 14 a 30 de novembro de 1980.

Mostra presents a retrospective in honor of Andy Warhol. “O Bom Povo Português”, by Rui Simões, on the Portuguese Carnation Revolution, was screened. It is considered one of the best movies ever made on political manipulation. It wins the Public Choice and the Critics Awards. For the first and only time in the history of the Festival, the screening of a film was forbidden in the 4th Mostra. The short-film forbidden by censorship was about the socialist indoctrination of Chinese children. In kitsch style, it showed children praising Mao under an apple tree whose apples had been painted to look redder. For the third year in a row, Mostra’s poster is created by Paulo de Andrade.
