O personagem principal é um menino que sonha reencontrar o ditador Franco e conhecer o pai, que ele nunca viu. Apesar de não se tratar de um filme autobiográfico, o diretor utiliza fatos de sua infância para avaliar a história de seu país, especialmente os anos de recessão que se seguiram à Guerra Civil Espanhola.
A Spanish production that won, among others, the Critics' Prize at the San Sebastián Festival and Best Film in the Directors' Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival. The main character is a boy who dreams of meeting the dictator Franco and getting to know the father he has never seen. Although not an autobiographical film, the director uses events from his own childhood to examine his country's history, especially the years of recession that followed the Spanish Civil War.
