Elem Klimov nasceu em 1933 em Tsarítsin (rebatizada de Stalingrado, atual Volgogrado). De 1951 a 1957, estudou engenharia e aeronáutica. De 1958 a 1963, estudou direção no Instituto de Cinema de Moscou (VGIK), na mesma turma de Otar Iosseliani e Eldar Chenguelaia. Após realizar seu primeiro longa-metragem, "Bem-vindos" (1964), passou a enfrentar dificuldades com o regime soviético ao aceitar o desafio de filmar "Agonia" (1981). A obra, que aborda as relações de Rasputin com a família do Czar Nicolau II, teve uma produção conturbada entre 1973 e 1977. Seu filme seguinte, o curta documental "Larissa" (1980), foi dedicado à sua esposa, a diretora Larisa Shepitko, falecida em um acidente em 1979. O longa "A Despedida" (1983) também era um projeto original de Larisa. Elem Klimov ocupa atualmente o cargo de presidente da União dos Cineastas Soviéticos, sendo em sua gestão que a censura no cinema soviético é rompida sob a política da Glasnost.
Elem Klimov was born in 1933 in Tsaritsyn (later renamed Stalingrad, now Volgograd). From 1951 to 1957, he studied engineering and aeronautics. From 1958 to 1963, he studied directing at the Moscow Film Institute (VGIK), in the same class as Otar Iosseliani and Eldar Shengelaya. After directing his first feature film, "Welcome, or No Trespassing" (1964), he began facing conflicts with the Soviet regime when he took on the challenge of filming "Agony" (1981). The work, which explores Rasputin's relationship with the family of Tsar Nicholas II, underwent a troubled production between 1973 and 1977. His subsequent film, the short documentary "Larisa" (1980), was dedicated to his wife, director Larisa Shepitko, who died in an accident in 1979. The feature film "Farewell" (1983) was also an original project conceived by Larisa. Elem Klimov currently holds the position of President of the Union of Soviet Filmmakers, and it is under his leadership that censorship in Soviet cinema is being dismantled through the policy of Glasnost.
