Nasceu em 1938, em Budapeste. Era um conhecido locutor de rádio antes de estudar na Academia de Cinema e Artes Dramáticas, entre 1956 e 1961. Rodou seu primeiro longa-metragem em 1964. Em 1982, recebeu o Oscar de Melhor Filme Estrangeiro por "Mephisto" (1981, 5ª Mostra). Seus filmes seguintes foram "Coronel Redl" (1985, 9ª Mostra), "Hanussen" (1988, 12ª Mostra) e "Encontro com Vênus" (1991). Leciona cinema em Budapeste, Berlim e Londres.
Born in 1938, in Budapest. He was a well-known radio announcer before studying at the Academy of Drama and Film between 1956 and 1961. He shot his first feature film in 1964. In 1982, he received the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film for "Mephisto" (1981, 5th Mostra). His subsequent films included "Colonel Redl" (1985, 9th Mostra), "Hanussen" (1988, 12th Mostra), and "Meeting Venus" (1991). He teaches film in Budapest, Berlin, and London.
