Tomás Gutiérrez Alea nasceu em Havana, Cuba, em 1928. Parte em 1951 para Roma onde ficou dois anos estudando no Centro Experimental de Cinematografia. Em 1955 colaborou na realização do média-metragem neorealista "El Megano" (1955). Desde 1956 até o triunfo da revolução em Cuba, dirigiu vários curtas da Cinerevista e em 1959 seu primeiro documentário "Esta Tierra Nostra" (1959). Entre seus longas principais: "Memórias do Subdesenvolvimento" (1968), "A Última Ceia" (1976), vencedor da 2ª Mostra em 1978, e "Até Certo Ponto" (1984). Alea é o cineasta mais representativo do cinema cubano castrista.
Tomás Gutiérrez Alea was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1928. He left for Rome in 1951, where he spent two years studying at the Experimental Cinematography Center. In 1955, he collaborated on the making of the neorealist medium-length film "El Megano" (1955). From 1956 until the triumph of the revolution in Cuba, he directed several short films for Cinerevista, and in 1959 his first documentary "This Land of Ours" (1959). Among his main feature films: "Memories of Underdevelopment" (1968), "The Last Supper" (1976, winner of the 2nd Mostra, 1978), and "Up to a Certain Point" (1984). Alea is the most representative filmmaker of Castro-era Cuban cinema.
