Nasceu em Hemer, na Alemanha, em 1954. Diretor e roteirista, estudou história e estudos americanos pela Universidade Livre, de Berlim, e cinema na German Academy of Film and Television. "Borboletas" (1988, 18ª Mostra), seu primeiro longa-metragem, ganhou o Leopardo de Ouro no Festival de Locarno. Também dirigiu "Jogos de Criança" (1992, 18ª Mostra), "A Vida É Tudo que Temos" (1997, 21ª Mostra), "Adeus Lênin!" (2003, 27ª Mostra) e foi um dos diretores de "Bem-Vindo a São Paulo" (2004, 28ª Mostra), filme coletivo produzido pela Mostra e dedicado a Abbas Kiarostami. Integrou o júri da 30ª Mostra.

He also directed "Child’s Play" (1992, 18th Mostra), "Life Is All You Get" (1997, 21st Mostra), "Good Bye Lenin!" (2003, 27th Mostra), and was one of the directors of "Welcome to São Paulo" (2004, 28th Mostra), a collective film produced by Mostra and dedicated to Abbas Kiarostami. He was part of the jury of the 30th Mostra.
