Sinopse
Cláudia é a presidiária mais antiga e respeitada da Penitenciária Madre Pelletier, em Porto Alegre. Quase no final de sua pena, ela se prepara para deixar a cadeia em breve, retomando o contato com a vida lá fora, a cidade que mudou, as linhas de ônibus que não conhece mais e a ansiedade para reencontrar o filho, que há muito ela não vê. Betânia, mãe de duas crianças, vai ser beneficiada com o regime semi-aberto, tentar arranjar um emprego e adaptar-se novamente à vida fora das grades. Logo ela se apaixona por um homem e sente a tentação de deixar de lado a pensão provisória e suas regras para viver a nova liberdade. Enquanto isso, a jovem Daniela, acusada de ter matado o próprio filho, entra na cadeia. Enquanto aguarda julgamento, ela encara as angústias da nova situação, o medo da represália das outras – que não aceitam o crime contra crianças – e procura proteção na presa mais antiga, Cláudia. Através destas três histórias, o filme constrói um painel da vida carcerária das mulheres que, ao contrário dos homens, são quase sempre abandonadas por amigos e familiares. Uma exceção é um marido apaixonado que todas as noites declara em altos brados seu amor à mulher, uma das presas.
Cláudia is the longest-serving and most respected inmate at the Madre Pelletier Detention Center in Porto Alegre, Brazil. She’s done her sentence and she is preparing to leave prison. When she comes into contact with the outside world, she realizes how much the city has changed and all the new bus lines that have opened. She’s anxious to meet her beloved son again, whom she hasn’t seen in years. Betânia is a mother of two and is benefiting from parole. She hopes to find a job and adapt to life outside the bars again. Soon, she falls in love with a man and feels tempted to break parole to enjoy her freedom to the full. In the mean time, young Daniela arrives in jail for killing her son. While she awaits trial, she is confronted with the stark reality of her new situation, the fear of reprisals from the other inmates, usually very strict about crimes against children. Understandably, she seeks protection from Cláudia. Through these three interwoven convict stories, the filmmaker portrays an account of life in a women’s prison. Unlike men, convict women are nearly always deserted by their friends and families. The film shows an exception: every night an infatuated husband declares his undying love - at the top of his lungs – for his wife, one of the inmates.
