Nasceu em Rouen, França, em 1928. Histórico cineasta francês, foi crítico de cinema da revista Cahiers du Cinéma entre 1953 e 1969, onde também foi editor por alguns anos. Rivette foi assistente de Jacques Becker e Jean Renoir, e estreou na direção de longas- metragens com “Paris nos Pertence” (1961), um dos filmes mais importantes da Nouvelle Vague francesa. Entre os trabalhos mais notórios de Rivette estão “A Religiosa” (1966), “Amor Louco” (1968), “Out 1” (1971), “Celine e Julie Vão de Barco” (1974), vencedor do Prêmio Especial do Júri no Festival de Locarno, “Duelo” (1976), “Um Passeio em Paris” (1981), “O Bando das Quatro” (1989), menção honrosa e Prêmio da Crítica no Festival de Berlim, “A Bela Intrigante” (1991), Grande Prêmio do Júri no Festival de Cannes, “Joana, a Virgem: As Batalhas” e “Joana, a Virgem: As Prisões”, ambos realizados em 1994, “Defesa Secreta” (1998, 22ª Mostra), “Quem Sabe” (2001, 25ª Mostra), “A História de Marie e Julien” (2003, 27ª Mostra) e “Não Toque no Machado” (2007, 31ª Mostra). Rivette morreu em 2016 aos 87 anos.

Among his most important works are “The Nun” (1966), “L’Amour Fou” (1968), “Out 1” (1971), “Celine and Julie Go Boating” (1974), winner of the Special Jury Prize at the Locarno Film Festival, “Duelle” (1976), “A North Bridge” (1981), “Gang of Four” (1989), honorable mention and Critics Prize at the Berlinale, “The Beautiful Troublemaker” (1991), Grand Prize of the Jury at the Cannes Film Festival, “Joan the Maid: The Battles” and “Joan the Maid: The Prisons”, both made in 1994, “Secret Defense” (1998, 22nd Mostra), “Who Knows” (2001, 25th Mostra), “The Story of Marie and Julien” (2003, 27th Mostra) and “The Duchess of Langeais” (2007, 31st Mostra). Rivette died in 2016 at the age of 87.
