No ano de seu vigésimo aniversário, A Mostra obteve uma grande vitória junto à alfândega: uma instrução normativa que eliminou dificuldades burocráticas e passou a facilitar o trânsito das obras de arte e a produção de eventos culturais no país. A grande retrospectiva da edição foi dedicada ao rebelde cineasta japonês Eizo Sugawa e a arte do pôster do ano ficou a cargo de outro japonês inesquecível, Akira Kurosawa. A 20ª Mostra Internacional de Cinema aconteceu em São Paulo de 18 de outubro a 1º de novembro de 1996.

In the year of its 20th anniversary, a great victory: customs issues a normative ruling that eliminates bureaucracy and makes the exchange of works of art and cultural events’ production in the country easier. The big retrospective was dedicated to the rebel Japanese filmmaker Eizo Sugawa, and the poster’s artwork was the responsibility of unforgettable Japanese artist, Akira Kurosawa.
