Paul works as a sales manager in a delicatessen. His fixation, however, is with feet and shoes. He would be able to hold forth for hours on why black shoes and brown shoes are monotonous, and why red shoes are so very passionate. During the day, whenever he has the time, he dials telephone numbers at random. If anyone answers, he invariably asks them what type of shoes they are wearing. To his chagrin, those questioned on the telephone always bang the phone down in his face. He does not notice that his neighbour, Mrs Mischke, would not mind at all if she were to give him her shoes and her heart, too. One day, Paul's telephone call happens to be to the house of Leila, a young Turkish girl who has not been out of doors into the street since a friend was killed in a neonazi attack. To Paul's surprise, Leila does not hang up.
