Arte por Emir Kusturica
Nesta edição, pela primeira vez, a Mostra não exibiu um filme na sua noite de abertura, mas sim um show musical com a The No Smoking Orchestra, banda dirigida pelo ilustre cineasta Emir Kusturica. O clima irreverente de Kusturica, que pôde ser conferido em uma retrospectiva de sua obra, espalhou-se na arte do pôster, assinada por ele, e na divertida vinheta, uma das “vedetes” do festival. A partir de 2001, o Júri começou a dar dois prêmios: Melhor Longa de Ficção, que ficou com O Novo País, de Geir Hansteen Jörgensen, e Melhor Documentário, que foi dividido entre Janela da Alma, de João Jardim e Walter Carvalho, e Onde a Terra Acaba, de Sérgio Machado. A 25ª Mostra Internacional de Cinema aconteceu em São Paulo de 19 de outubro a 1º de novembro de 2001.

For the first time MOSTRA didn’t have any films screened at the opening night. It had a musical concert with THE NO SMOKING ORCHESTRA, a band conducted by famous filmmaker Emir Kusturica. Kusturica’s spirited mood spread all the way to the poster’s artwork, signed by him, and also in the fun vignette, one of the Festival’s attractions. All this was shown in a retrospective about his work. From this year on, the Jury started giving out two awards: Best Fiction Feature Film, that went to “THE NEW COUNTRY”, by Geir Hansteen Jörgensen and Best Documentary, shared between “SOUL’S WINDOW” by João Jardim and Walter Carvalho and “ONDE A TERRA ACABA” by Sérgio Machado.
